If you spend your summer at the beach, around the pool, or on the boat, your swim trunks are the most essential part of your warm-weather wardrobe. You want a tried-and-true pair of men’s swim trunks that make a statement—and don’t fade after a few sunny afternoons.
Does it sound too good to be true? Not when you choose Southern Tide swim trunks and take proper care of them. We’ve made a list of our favorite swim trunks for men to fit your style, along with tips to keep them looking brand new season after season.
Our Favorite Men’s Swim Trunks
A reliable pair of swimming trunks can quickly become part of your favorite beach vacation outfit. Learn all about the latest trends in men’s swimwear and which one you should choose for your personal style.
Classic Swim Trunks
You can’t go wrong with classic solid-color men’s swim trunks. Perfect for a pick-up volleyball match or spike ball face-off, these trunks have a drawstring waist to keep them in place, even as you dive into the sand for the game-winning save. The quick-dry fabric pulls moisture from your skin, and the trunks fold neatly into the zipper for easy packing.
Printed Swim Trunks
There are endless options when it comes to patterns. Hawaiian flowers, palm trees, and fish are popular options for men’s swim trunks, but you can choose any pattern that catches your eye. The nautical look can come in many unique varieties, from seascape swim shorts to nautical stripe trunks featuring UV protection and added stretch. Just take your pick and you’ll find yourself soaking in the compliments along with the sunshine.
Striped Swim Trunks
Stripes are visually interesting and give off that coastal vibe that goes perfectly with any vacation. This year, men’s swim trunks come in all different styles of stripes—nautical, pin, barcode, you name it. Instead of the usual same-sized stripes, we’re really digging the look with blocks of solid colors interrupted by varying lines and shapes. Pick bright oranges and pinks to match that amazing sunset over the water.
Short Swim Trunks
Short swim trunks aren’t just for professional swimmers. Choose a pair of men’s short swim trunks if you don’t like the drag of longer trunks in the water or if you’re chasing the kids along the shore. These fitness-inspired trunks bring 70s vibes to any beach party.
Board Shorts
If you love to swim but prefer a longer look than standard trunks, a pair of board shorts may be the cool swim trunks you’re looking for. They’re made with stronger material to make sure that the fabric continues to last after repeatedly rubbing up against a waxed surfboard (hence “board shorts”). The waistband is also more secure than the average pair of trunks, as its defined front has a hidden button and a drawstring to keep your suit where it belongs: on your body. The slightly longer length helps give you more room to move (and more coverage).
Performance Shorts
Along with a new pair of swim trunks, performance shorts are a great addition to your summer wardrobe. Throwing on a pair of performance shorts will prepare you for any kind of activity that comes your way. Brunch on the patio? You’ll fit right in with a gray or khaki pair. Last-minute decision to take the boat out? Don’t worry about jumping in the water—the quick-dry feature will dry you off before you’re even back on land.
Swim Trunks Care Guide
Your new swim trunks look and feel great—but how long until they get stretched out and faded? With proper care, you can keep those new trunks looking brand new after afternoons of chlorine, salt water, and sunshine. Follow our swim trunks care guide to keep your swim trunks colorful and comfortable for many summers to come.
Treat Your New Swim Trunks Before Wearing
Before doing anything with your swim trunks, pretreat your trunks. Add a few drops of detergent for delicates and hand wash your new suit in the sink. You can also mix a quart of water and two tablespoons of distilled vinegar in a clean sink, bathtub or large plastic container, and let the suit sit for 20 to 30 minutes.
Don’t pretreat your trunks in the washing machine, as the agitation may damage elasticity before you get a chance to wear them.
Wash in Cold Water Before and After Swimming
Before taking your swim trunks into the pool or beach, rinse them in cold water. A pre-rinse lets trunks absorb fresh water before they’re exposed to salt from the ocean and chemicals from the pool. You can rinse them in the sink before putting them on or take a quick shower in cool water.
When you’re done swimming, rinse with cold water to prevent salt and chlorine from seeping into the fabric. Don’t use warm water, as it breaks down the material’s fibers, causing your trunks to loosen and fade.
Lay Flat to Dry
To keep your trunks swim trunks in prime condition, lay them flat to dry after you rinse them with cold water. Don’t wring them out if they’re dripping wet—just gently squeeze out excess water or pat them with a towel. And don’t roll them up in your towel to take home (an old swimmer’s trick that can damage your trunks’ elasticity over a period of time).
